Background: musculoskeletal disorders are significant problems in workers, causing both economic and public health complications. These disorders result in work absenteeism, disability, and increased morbidity and mortality in the general population.
Objective: the aim of this study is to compile the best available evidence on work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
Methods: a literature review was performed using the following eligibility criteria to select the articles: to be published in the last 5 years and to belong to quartiles one to four. No discrimination was made by language and studies with different methodological designs were included, such as analyses, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective and prospective studies. The electronic bibliographic databases used to search for scientific articles were Pubmed, Cochrane, SciELO, Scopus, among others. Information was extracted individually from each article, following the PICOs strategy of the Prisma Guide.
Results: a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was identified in workers worldwide. The symptoms most commonly associated with these disorders were pain in the cervical and lumbar region. Among the related risk factors were female sex, age over 50 years, body mass index over 25 kg/m2, prolonged standing, repetitive movements, static postures, working hours over 8 hours, and even work experience of more than 5 years
