Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of abscesses in elite swimmers, analyzing the environmental conditions to which they are exposed and proposing prevention strategies for oral infections. A non-experimental, descriptive and quantitative methodological design was used, applying a 22-question survey to 20 elite swimmers from Lago Agrio and Ibarra. The analysis revealed that the occurrence of oral infections is associated with oral hygiene habits and the conditions of the training environment, such as the pH of the pool water. Inadequate oral cleanliness and the unfavorable environment can favor not only abscesses, but also gingivitis, periodontitis and caries, which affects both the health and sports performance of swimmers. The importance of educating swimmers about proper oral hygiene habits and ensuring the quality of pool water is emphasized. These actions would significantly reduce the incidence of oral infections, favoring the health and performance of athletes in competitions and training.
