Evaluation of the scientific literature on sports mouthguards in the dental setting

The objective of this literature review was to determine the most appropriate mouthguard for athletes, evaluating its effectiveness, comfort and ability to prevent injuries. After analyzing several scientific studies, it was concluded that the Type III (customized) mouthguard is the most effective. This device stands out for its ability to efficiently absorb and distribute impacts, significantly reducing the risk of orofacial injuries. Its design adapted to the user's anatomy ensures an optimal fit, improving comfort and encouraging continuous use, especially in contact sports such as boxing, rugby and mixed martial arts. In addition, the review revealed limited knowledge among coaches and athletes about mouthguards, underscoring the need to implement educational programs that highlight their importance, correct use and the risks associated with their absence. These programs could foster a greater safety culture in the sports environment. In conclusion, the customized mouthguard is a key tool for protection in contact sports. Its widespread use, accompanied by adequate education, not only prevents injuries, but also contributes to improving the health and performance of athletes.
