Evaluation of modern dental approaches in the care of the geriatric patient

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the importance of oral health in the well-being of older adults, considering it essential for healthy aging. The prevention of oral diseases and the implementation of effective clinical strategies are a priority to improve the quality of life in this population, which faces challenges such as physiological aging, chronic diseases and psychosocial barriers. This literature review, based on a qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach, analyzes the most effective techniques in the dental management of geriatric patients, gathering information from the last five years. The strategies identified include clear communication adapted to the patient's capabilities, minimally invasive procedures to reduce stress and dental preservation, and a comprehensive evaluation that takes into account systemic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Pain and anxiety management is a priority, highlighting the use of conscious sedation and analgesia in a welcoming environment that generates trust. It is concluded that success in geriatric care depends on clinical skills, interpersonal sensitivity and constant updating in technology and therapies. Patience, empathy and personalization of treatments are key to strengthening the therapeutic bond and ensuring quality care.
