Objective: To describe the relationship and influence of trait emotional intelligence (EI) on suicide risk (SR) of young nursing students.
Methods: Quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional research. Non-probabilistic sampling, and 201 students participated. A survey with sociodemographic background was applied virtually; In addition, Emotional Intelligence was evaluated with the TEIQue-SF scale; and suicidal ideation through the Beck Hopelessness Scale.
Results: a moderate negative correlation is evidenced (r= -0,376; p=0,000) for one of the trait EI factors and SR level.
Conclusions: a lower level of the well-being factor of the trait EI was related to a higher level of RS. Trait EI was associated as a protective factor against RS in these students. The training centers should implement programs that promote the development of EI as opposed to suicidal ideation
